Day two of the GROW Conference in Vancouver turned out to be a great day for Alberta companies. Four Alberta-based startups were selected to participate in the first round of the Startup Smackdown - 60 second pitches followed by feedback - and all received high scores from the judges. Representing both Calgary and Edmonton, these four highlighted some of the great ideas that are being developed here in the province.
BeauCoo is a soon-to-be-released mobile app that encourages women of all shapes and sizes to share photos of each other as they shop for clothing. The central idea here being that if your BeauCoo friends are a similar shape/size as you, trading style and shopping tips will make clothes shopping easier, accessible, and more fun.
Kawkfighter is, as the name implies, the self described “ultimate rooster battling game for Facebook.” Each player raises their Kawk and battles against friends’ once they are big and strong enough.
Mover targets the enterprise space, allowing for the seamless movement of data in the cloud. This is particularly useful for developers creating applications using one or more cloud storage service.
Sparkle is social good through social maps. This new app will allow for users to easily add social good actions to their everyday interactions, such as buying an extra beverage for someone while getting their morning coffee.
Curious about how it all turned out? Well, Mover and Kawkfighter joined two other startups in the final pitch round and Mover won! Congratulations all around.
