Calgary-based BeauCoo announces $1.1M seed round; gears up for major North American launch.

Funding led by Zinc Ventures and will be spent on product development, marketing and key hires.

Calgary, Canada - BeauCoo, founded in 2012 by Christian MacLean, Victoria MacLean, Rick Cotter and Cory Smith, is a new platform designed to connect women of similar body types to share style and store information, earn real-world rewards and to improve their overall shopping experience. Any woman who’s struggled finding a form-flattering cocktail dress or figuring out the right style of jeans to compliment her curves can attest that this is no easy task, yet this is a real-world problem that countless women (co-founder Victoria included) can identify with.

For a platform that has yet to launch, the startup and its core team have had quite the year already. When Decoder, the Calgary-based mobile development company founded by BeauCoo’s four founders, was acquired on March 1st - the team decided to branch off and undertake a new a project: BeauCoo. Within an extremely short period of time, the experienced team has rallied to raise 1.1M, led by Zinc Ventures and Western Canadian investor Brad Zumwalt of Veer.

This recent injection of capital brings total investment in BeauCoo to 1.2M which includes 100K raised earlier this year. The BeauCoo team is currently operating with a core team of 6 (a 50/50 male to female ratio at present) but continue to work closely on a strategic level with Decoder.

While each of the four co-founders are well-known for their achievements and influence on the Calgary startup community, Victoria and Christian MacLean are often recognized for their early contributions as co-founders to both AcceleratorYYC and Startup Calgary. Regrettably due to the level of commitment required to focus full-time on BeauCoo, they have made the difficult decision to step away from those organizations for an undetermined period of time.
