Edmonton is the home of the game development industry here in Alberta. Over 75% of the industry employed here in Alberta works in the Edmonton region developing games for platforms such as the PC, console, mobile, web,social, and of course the serious games space. With such a diverse range of development going on, we can sum up the game development scene in Edmonton with just one word—“Opportunity”.
Now this might sound like a strange word to use for a jurisdiction with no official Provincial tax credit system in place for game development and a much smaller workforce than what we see in Quebec, Ontario, and British Columbia, but there are plenty of reasons for us to feel that opportunity does exist and that it is the theme of our home city.
Edmonton is home to some exceptional talent. With an overabundance of fantastic post-secondary schools (a few of which are now focusing on delivering game development specific education) and a city that has historically been known for its arts and culture and rich classic/nerd gaming scene, the talent necessary for game development can be found in every corner.
