It’s a Button! Facebook is trying to regain advertisers since their disastrous IPO (It even beat RIM in the “fastest to lose market value” race). But, you ask, what about that button?
The new button, at its root, is an action that advertisers can use to help create a social shopping forum. It is a new Facebook feature called “Collections” that retailers can create within the Facebook platform and is currently being tested in the US by Pottery Barn and Victoria’s Secret. This feature will enable retailers to link Facebook users directly to their online stores where they can be persuaded to get what they “Want”.
This strategy might help Facebook in both the collection of consumer data and its ability to generate a new revenue source that can hopefully boost share performance.
Some are not impressed. Matt Miller at Forbes put forth that it “is a scary idea for users”. He suggests that, with its attempt to please investors, Facebook might be “goading its users” into spending money. Matt suggests that an “assertive business model could have the potential to change how users feel on Facebook” and”that could frighten them away”.
The button will not be available on external sites as a plug-in as of yet.
