In 2006, two students from City University in Hong Kong (CityU) had a positive student internship at the Banff New Media Institute at The Banff Centre. In addition to the students’ successful results, both institutions benefited from the relationship by gaining an understanding of international technology methodology and were rewarded by working through the challenges of cross-cultural collaboration.
To build on the success of last year’s efforts, CityU is looking for an opportunity to place two students with Alberta technology companies, with a particular interest in those in the digital media field. These placements are educational in nature and are intended to give the student an opportunity to learn by applying their skills in a business environment. Ideally, there would be an opportunity for the students to participate in 1 or 2 specific projects as part of their learning process. Students will also benefit from the cultural experiences that would come with their stay in Canada.
The time period for this learning program is June 11 to August 10, 2007. Students can either be situated at the same organization or placed at separate companies.
The students who would like to take advantage of this opportunity have been identified. Both are bilingual (Chinese/English) and specialize in Computer Engineering. They have worked on projects ranging from designing MP3 player hardware to C language programming for industrial applications and equipment. They are familiar with most major programming languages and creative production software.
What are the benefits to your company / organization?
• You will be interacting with innovative and qualified university educated students with strengths in computer hardware and software development and operation.
• Students will be dedicated to learning in a stimulating environment at limited operational cost to the hosting company.
• You will be promoting cross-cultural understanding. Not only will your employees gain a better view on Chinese culture, but the placement will certainly make a positive addition to your company’s annual report.
• Foreign students will be able to provide a unique perspective on your company, products, and processes.
• The students may act as an initial point of contact for your company in establishing Hong Kong / Asian business opportunities.
• Your organization will establish a strong relationship between CityU and the Alberta technology sector. This could pave the way for future business forays into the Asian market.
Costs associated with the student’s transportation, accommodations and meals are borne by CityU and the students. However, it is expected some assistance may be required to find and secure accommodations for these students for the duration of their stay in Alberta.
If you are interested in pursuing this opportunity, please contact Chad Kerychuk by March 16, 2007 for more information. He will be putting together a list of interested companies to forward to CityU. All details of the student’s placements will be coordinated directly between CityU and the hosting company.
There are a couple of highly enthusiastic students who would very much like to come to Alberta to enhance their learning experience.
