The guys over at mobiThinking have one of the most interesting statistic libraries with a wealth of numbers and information for those of you interested in the mobile space. What do you need to know…? How many subscribers worldwide are in the market? What smart phones do they use? Who’s running the show?

Here are few tidbits from the “big data” aggregate:

Top Mobile Ad networks

  • Top mobile ad networks in America are Google, Millennial Media, Apple, Yahoo!, Microsoft and Jumptap.
  • IDC estimates that mobile ad expenditure in this market was $2.1 billion in 2011
  • Google takes the lead with 70% market share (search and display combined)

Consumer Behavior: Mobile shopping

4 out of 5 US smart phone users use their phone to help them while they shop, according to Google/Ipsos (April 2011).

A survey of over 5000 smart phone owners in the US found 79% use a smart phone to help with shopping and 70% use their phone in store. This is broken down into even more in-store metrics. Also 74% of smart phone shoppers used research on phone to help them make purchasing decisions. The average annual spend on mobile purchases was US$300.

Why advertisers need a mobile-friendly website

Google/Ipsos (US consumer Mobile Movement survey April 2011):

42% of people, who react to seeing an ad, click on ads.

Of the people who react to seeing a mobile ad:

  • 42% click it;
  • 35% visit the site;
  • 32% search for more information using their phone;
  • 49% make a purchase and
  • 27% call the business.

And yet 79% of large online advertisers still do not have a mobile optimized site!
