Tuesday night was the Tech Rev Innovator Awards and 11 companies were recognized as leaders in Calgary's tech community. The TechRev Innovators 2012, an initiative of Innovate Calgary, was an invitation-only reception attended by close to 300 of the most influential tech sector stakeholders in Calgary: technology entrepreneurs, investors, industry partners, and collaborators. An impressive 400 companies were nominated for TechRev Innovators 2012, a platform created to shine the spotlight on milestone achievements of local technology companies. The selection process concluded with companies evaluated on a number of elements including those relating to financial performance, operational growth, and market viability.
Shawn Abbott, TechRev Advisory Council member and emcee for the evening, explained that “we've seen an uptick of innovative new start ups in the Calgary area in 2012 and more than ever entrepreneurs are thinking globally and approaching opportunities with solid fundamental business models that I believe will serve us well in coming years.”
Some notable insights derived from the TechRev Innovators 2012 survey include:
80% of the TechRev Community released at least one new product in the past year.
35% of the TechRev Community secured external investment in the past year
36% of the TechRev Community expanded their international reach in the past year.
55% of the TechRev Community expanded local operations in the past year.
35% of the TechRev Community entered new industry sectors in the past year.
Mayor Naheed Nenshi was on hand to offer congratulations to the award winners and nominees.
“The success of so many technology innovators shows that Calgary is a great breeding ground for amazing work by many smart people,” said Mayor Nenshi. “We all benefit when entrepreneurs choose to establish and grow their companies in our city, and it’s important for us all to continue to work together, as a community, to support and foster innovation.”
