Video 2.0 workshop - Post Event

The Video 2.0 workshop organized by Digital Alberta and led at the Banff Centre the weekend of March 4-7th was a great success in large part to the efforts and dedication of Board Director and Marketing Chair, Alex Gault and our partners at the Banff New Media Institute.

One of the projects at the workshop was for participants to work in teams to produce short videos. We had an American Idol-like contest at the end … and below is the winning entry. 1 minute long.

(As there seems to be Australian’s everywhere in Banff, each video had to frame their production around the “Aussies in Banff” theme.)

We had four stellar speakers, all with extensive experience as entrepreneurs in the video space. The workshop focused upon tools and techniques for creating 30-180 second videos, and how to market and distribute those video using social media. We also explored how to produce video that specifically served a marketing function, and how to make money producing video. Group work included a competition to produce and market (using social media) a short video.

Frank Chindamo (Founder and President of Fun Little Movies)
Ashkan Karbasfrooshan (CEO of WatchMojo)

Duncan Kennedy (COO of Thwapr)

Nick Alexander (COO of Fun Little Movies)

Frank runs a video production business in Hollywood, teaches at the USC School of Cinematic Arts, and has won several prestigious international awards for short comedy video.

TechCrunch recently published 6 bold articles by Ash on the business of short video. Duncan has been working on technology which supports online video production for years—and was the product manager with the team at Apple which developed QuickTime in the early 90s.

Of the participants, about 40% were from Calgary, 35% from Edmonton, and 25% from Banff. About 50% were worked in content development, and 50% worked in marketing.
